.eBay ITEM NUMBER: 86 Original Vintage William S. Haynes Wooden Flute, Closed Hole. Regular G# mechanism.
Probably Pitched at 435, but can easily play at 440. Serial number. Year made: 1909. Trademark stamped on headjoint, body and footjoint.
Sterling Silver keys. Grenadilla body. Small hairline crack on footjoint, which appears to have been repaired at one point.
Needs a proper cleaning, and an overhaul. The pads look to be original. Haynes commented that the flutes he made during this period were the best he'd ever made. Flute is in its original case, which is in two halves, and has compartment for piccolo plus extra piccolo headjoint & swab. Flute comes with protective metal end caps. The flute was made with a crutch, which has been plugged.
Crutch is included. I compared this flute next to my Powell made in 1958 and the Haynes won in terms of tonal color and flexibility. It plays very well in tune with itself.
For the age of the instrument, it is intact and sounds incredible. It does have a few very small niks, checks & 1 chip in the wood that doesn't affect playability. Haynes Wooden Piccolo, plus addtl headjoint also for sale by same owner. Original Vintage William S.
Haynes Wooden Piccolo. Serial number.
Year made: 1909. Probably Pitched at 435, but comes with 2 headjoints, one is shorter & higher pitched, plays at 440, 442, 444.
The longer headjoint is lower pitched, closer to 435 at its most comfortable playing position, but can play to 440 when pushed all the way in. Sterling Silver keys. Grenadilla body. Three hairline cracks in the smaller headjoint near the tenon, but repairable. The small rib nearest the headjoint & the end of the larger rib right before the D# key (ribs are screwed into the body of the piccolo & hold the posts and rods that hold the keys) are bent and would need to be straightened. The piccolo is missing the rod and attached trill keys. The pads look to be original, G# pad is missing, and are not playable.
Needs a proper cleaning, an overhaul, plus the replacement of trill keys and rod. I spoke to Haynes, and they said those parts can be purchased and if requested, they can do the repair work. If sending it to another repair shop, it needs to be someone who is a flute maker because the small pieces all need to be soldered together before attaching to the piccolo.
Haynes piccolos have a great reputation and when this piccolo is repaired it will be amazing.
