(archive). (band gear). (band gear). I'd agree with this. Obviously most vocalists have perhaps only a decade of true greatness before one or more internal and/or external factors put a stop to it.
However, there are some who seem to wield vocal superpowers for more or less their whole lives - I'd put Thom in that rarefied category, as well as Prince. Of course, the quality of a recorded live concert, as well as the concerts themselves, vary so much again so it's common to hear an 'unfortunate' recording, it's easy to conclude they've 'lost it', but put them in a comfortable situation and they'll deliver the goods every time.
